Types of computers


We have previously discussed computers, their functionalities, and their applications. Now we are going to discuss different types of computers available in the market. 

The computer comes in different shapes and sizes, they can be as large as a building or as small as a laptop or mobile phones. Computers can be classified or categorized according to their speed and power consumption. The basic types of computers are as follows:


Super Computers
  • These are the fastest computers available on the market.
  • They can perform up to 10 trillion calculation per second.
  • They are the most expensive computers.
  • They are used to solve complex science and engineering problems.
  • These are specialized and task-specific computers.
  • They are mostly used by large organizations.
  • They are very large in size and can acquire an entire building.

Mainframe Computers
  • They are large and expensive computers.
  • Can support up to hundreds or even thousands of users simultaneously
  • Can execute many programs concurrently.
  • Can be accommodated in large air-conditioned rooms.

Mini Computers
  • It is a mid-size computer.
  • It is a multiprocessing system.
  • It can hold up to 250 users simultaneously.
  • These are used by small business and firms.
  • They unable user to store data and execute simple commands and tasks.

Personal Computers

  • These are low cost and small-sized computers.
  • These are based on microprocessor technology.
  • They are designed as a single user system.
  • They can be linked together to form a network.
  • They can be used at home or at the office.
